The LeaderShape Institute
At the UC LeaderShape Institute, we learned to identify our strengths and weaknesses as leaders and develop a philosophy for leadership, as well as create a vision and several concrete action steps towards fulfilling that vision. The vision that I chose was for music and the arts to be regarded as pillars of a balanced education, and for every student to have the opportunity in school to get involved with the arts. Upon taking the DISC personality assessment test, I found that I was most heavily an i - Inducement (or Influence). I tend to lead by building relationships with others, and I rely on social situations and two-way communication in order to bring about change. We also learned about building inclusive and diverse teams, and the importance of integrity. One key aspect of the LeaderShape Institute that I found difficult at times was daily reflection. I am not used to writing down my thoughts and feelings, but the activities at LeaderShape helped to show me the importance of self-reflection in finding out what it is that is truly important to you.
At the end of the Institute we developed a Breakthrough Blueprint to define our vision and steps we would take towards realizing it. This is below and to the left. To the right is the Staying in Action Guide which gives a good overview of what we went over at the Institute.
